In Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, a bride called off her wedding, claiming that her groom was under the influence of alcohol. The bride’s family, angered by the situation, demanded compensation from the groom's side.
Following the bride's refusal, the situation escalated. The bride's family reportedly took the groom and his father hostage, demanding a ransom of ₹2.8 lakh. After negotiations, the groom’s family paid ₹95,000 to secure their release, with police presence at the scene.
This case draws attention to the societal pressures and double standards around marriage refusals. Traditionally, if a groom calls off a wedding, he and his family face societal backlash, potential police complaints, and demands for compensation. In this instance, even though the bride was the one to decline, the groom’s family faced financial pressure and responsibility.
