The Delhi Police told a city court on Saturday that, accused of sexual harassment of several women wrestlers, former WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Saran Singh was never declared innocent by the government, which appointed the oversight committee that was headed by champion woman boxer M C Mary Kom.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal, after hearing the part arguments of the Delhi Police, adjourned the matter.

Atul Srivastava, a special public prosecutor (SPP) for the Delhi Police, argued that the accused had never been cleared of the charges by the oversight committee. The committee never stated that the claims were false or baseless. The committee simply provided recommendations, according to SPP, for future use. An adjudication was not made. The public prosecutor told the court, “Singh was not exonerated by the oversight committee. The committee had given recommendations, not the decision”.

Brij Bhushan Saran Singh was present during the proceedings in court. The next date of hearing in the matter is September 23, on which the prosecution will add its argument.

In a 1,000-page charge sheet in the case, the Delhi police in June accused Mr. Singh and another former WFI staff member, Virendra Tomar, of offenses such as outraging modesty, making obscene statements, stalking, and criminal intimidation. On July 20, the accused was granted bail by the court.

Oversight committee

Earlier, as a result of the women wrestlers’ protest at the nation’s capital, the Union Sports Ministry established an oversight committee, which was chaired by Indian boxing icon M C Mary Kom, to investigate the allegations made against Brij Bhushan Saran Singh.
