Security at Delhi’s border areas has been tightened after Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) called for the demonstration has called for a nationwide protest in support of protesting wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India.

According to the official statement by Delhi police, the security personnel are keeping a vigil eye on border areas and extra forces have been put up to avoid any incident.

“Security has been tightened, extra police personnel have been deployed and we have also set up extra pickets at Delhi’s borders. We want to ensure that law and order are maintained and no untoward incident takes place. This has been done as a precautionary measure,” a senior police officer said.

At the borders, he said, vehicles coming into Delhi from surrounding states are being inspected.

A group representing farmers’ unions called for state-wide demonstrations on June 1 in support of wrestlers who have been calling for Singh’s arrest over allegations that he sexually harassed female competitors, including a minor.

The SKM had stated in a statement that it had called for protests to secure the Indian wrestlers’ and all other groups’ democratic right to demonstrate as well as to demand Singh, a BJP MP, be arrested.

The group has also said that they will connect with the trade unions, women, youth, students and all other sections, to join them in the demonstrations.

Noteworthy, the wrestlers who are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since April 23, seek the arrest of the WFI chief. Also, Delhi police removed them from the protesting site on Sunday after they tried to march to the new Parliament building, the day it was inaugurated, which resulted in their arrest and later let off.
