After being detained on Sunday while marching to the new Parliament building, the Delhi Police arrested wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia along with their supporters on allegations of rioting and blocking a public official from performing their duties. According to the police, 700 persons, including 109 demonstrators at Jantar Mantar, were held around Delhi.

Following an argument with security officials on Sunday, wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have been charged with rioting and obstructing employees of the government while they were on duty. The wrestlers attempted to march to the newly opened Parliament building, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla.

Vinesh Phogat responded to the move by saying that while it took the Delhi Police seven days to file a FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), it didn’t even take seven hours to arrest people who were protesting “peacefully.”

According to the information the FIR has been registered at Parliament Street police station under New Delhi district against the organisers of the protest, including wrestlers and others who were part of the scuffle that took place at Jantar Mantar today with the police.

Reportedly, the arrested people are still in detention. All the female wrestlers who were detained were released and the male wrestlers were also to be released later.

Several political parties have condemned the treatment given to the protesting wrestlers.
