Rekha Gupta becomes the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister position in Delhi. In a historic moment for Delhi, Rekha Gupta was sworn in as Chief Minister at a grand ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan. Gupta's appointment marks the end of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) 10-year rule and the return of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in the national capital after 27 years. She is the fourth woman to hold the top post in Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP).
Gupta's selection over more seasoned politicians has raised eyebrows. The BJP's decision to name Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, as Chief Minister caught many within the party off-guard. The 50-year-old leader was chosen over prominent figures like Parvesh Verma and Vijender Gupta. Sources suggest Vijender Gupta is likely to be the Delhi Assembly Speaker. This unexpected move is seen as a strategic decision to consolidate the support of women voters and promote a grassroots leader.
Gupta's journey is a testament to her dedication and service to the party. Born on July 19, 1974, Rekha Gupta's political journey began in student politics at Delhi University, where she served as President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU). A three-time councillor and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), Gupta has steadily risen through the ranks of the BJP4. In the recent assembly elections, she won the Shalimar Bagh seat by a significant margin.
The BJP emphasizes its commitment to women with Gupta at the helm. Gupta's appointment aligns with the BJP's emphasis on women empowerment. As the only woman Chief Minister among BJP-ruled states, she is expected to strengthen the party's credentials among women voters27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that Gupta will work for Delhi's development with full vigor.
Gupta pledges to fulfill the dreams of Delhi's people. Following the oath ceremony, Rekha Gupta pledged to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Delhi and expressed gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting her with this responsibility. She emphasized her commitment to honesty and vowed to hold corrupt individuals accountable. Kapil Mishra, who was also sworn in as a minister, stated that the new government will implement the Prime Minister's vision for Delhi.
