Winter Parliament Session: As the Indian Parliament reconvenes for the second day of its Winter Session on Tuesday, the economic situation of the country is likely to take centre stage in the Rajya Sabha.

Members of the Upper House, including Ayodhya Rami Reddy, Birendra Prasad Baishya, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Lakshmikant Bajpayee, Sushil Kumar Modi, Aditya Prasad and Shambhu Sharan Patel, are set to initiate a crucial discussion on the topic, sources confirmed.

This comes after a relatively eventful first day on Monday, which witnessed the passage of two Bills and the revocation of AAP MP Raghav Chadha's suspension in the Rajya Sabha. Moreover, the Standing Committee reports on three key bills – 'The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023', 'The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023', and 'The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023' – were tabled in both Houses.

The spotlight, however, is likely to shift to the economic debate in the Rajya Sabha. With concerns mounting over inflation, unemployment, and the broader health of the economy, the members' engagement with the government on this critical issue is highly anticipated.

On a separate note, the Rajya Sabha successfully passed the Bill repealing the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 and consolidating the laws governing post offices across India. While the move garnered support, some opposition members expressed concerns over specific provisions, questioning if it was a step towards creating a "surveillance state." The government, however, refuted these apprehensions, emphasizing that the provisions existed in the previous version of the bill and were solely for national security purposes.
