Congress senior leader Sonia Gandhi is leaving the house this year, 25 years after her (unexpected) first term in the Lok Sabha with remarkable electoral record. Notably, she will be the second one from the Gandhi family to enter Rajya Sabha after former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was a member of the Upper House from August 1964 to February 1967.
Gandhi, 77, is repositioning herself rather than retiring; she will not, however, be leaving the public eye just yet. Her new home will be in the Rajya Sabha. On Wednesday, she has filed her nomination from Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Notably, a total of 56 Rajya Sabha members from 15 states are retiring in April and the election to the seats will be held on February 27. The last date for filing nominations is February 15.
Sonia Gandhi's decision to contest the Rajya Sabha election from Jaipur has been attributed to several factors, both personal and political. Not only this, she will be the second one from the Gandhi family to enter Rajya Sabha after former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was a member of the Upper House from August 1964 to February 1967.
Health reasons: Concerns have been raised about her health, and a shift to the Rajya Sabha, which has less strenuous campaigning compared to Lok Sabha elections, could alleviate some of the physical demands.
Vacating Rae Bareli seat: Her move opens up the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, potentially paving the way for her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest it, marking her official entry into electoral politics.
Strategic move: The Congress party is confident of winning one Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan, and choosing Jaipur strengthens their presence in the state.
Symbolic significance: Jaipur was the last place where Indira Gandhi addressed a rally before her assassination. Sonia Gandhi contesting from here carries a strong symbolic message for the Congress party.
Continuing political engagement: Entering the Rajya Sabha allows her to remain active in national politics without the burden of direct electoral contest.
It's important to note that these are just some of the possible reasons, and the exact motivations behind Sonia Gandhi's decision may be complex and multifaceted.
Dr Manmohan Singh's retirement: Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who also represented Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha, is retiring this year. Sonia Gandhi's entry could be seen as a way to maintain the party's legacy in the state.
Upcoming elections: With several key state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching, Sonia Gandhi's presence in the Rajya Sabha could provide guidance and strategic direction to the party.
Ultimately, the true reasons behind her decision might not be fully known publicly. However, the various factors mentioned above offer some insights into the potential motivations for Sonia Gandhi's choice.
