Uddhav Thackeray, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, is grappling with growing political challenges due to his perceived opportunistic moves. During the 2019 assembly elections, the Shiv Sena-BJP Grand Alliance secured 161 seats, with BJP winning 105 and Shiv Sena 56. However, Uddhav’s decision to break from the alliance and join forces with Congress and NCP to become Chief Minister has led to significant setbacks.
Throughout his tenure, Uddhav’s leadership capabilities were frequently questioned. His inability to manage government functions effectively and his lack of familiarity with parliamentary procedures were apparent. Rarely visiting the Chief Minister’s office, Uddhav’s minimal engagement and weak responses to opposition in the legislature only heightened concerns about his governance. Moreover, internal conflicts within his own party arose, with many ministers and MLAs distancing themselves from him.
It is evident that Congress and NCP capitalised on Uddhav’s vulnerabilities for their own political advantage. Despite Uddhav’s appeal to their voter base, his party received little reciprocal support. His ambition to secure the Chief Minister’s seat not only compromised Shiv Sena’s legacy, but also allowed Congress and NCP to exploit him as a weak point in the coalition. This was further exemplified when Uddhav’s unilateral decision regarding a candidate for the Sangli Lok Sabha Constituency backfired, resulting in a rebel victory.
Recently, accusations by Shri Manoj Jarange Patil suggested Uddhav attempted to frame him in a case, allegedly under Sharad Pawar's influence. This incident has strained relations further within the alliance. Both Congress and NCP seem to view Uddhav as a weakening force and continue leveraging his diminishing influence for their electoral gain. His party has already started to fracture, losing key support.
