New Delhi: A controversy has erupted in Shimla’s Sanjauli over an alleged illegal construction of a mosque, sparking tension between communities. The dispute intensified after a clash between youths, leading Hindu organizations to demand the demolition of the mosque. Although the mosque has existed since before 1947, two additional floors have allegedly been constructed without permission.
Members of Hindu organizations, joined by three Congress councillors, held a rally outside the mosque and staged a sit-in, demanding that the unauthorised structures be demolished. Shops owned by individuals from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur were also closed in the area.

The issue has reached the state assembly, with Congress minister Anirudh Singh leading the call for the mosque’s demolition. He emphasized that the matter is not about religion but concerns unauthorized construction on government land. According to Singh, illegal construction began in 2010, expanding to 6,750 square feet. He also raised concerns about outsiders, suggesting that stricter measures are needed to prevent unauthorized individuals, including potential foreign nationals, from settling in the area.
Congress MLA Harish Janartha, however, downplayed the religious angle, stating that the issue arose due to a clash between two groups. He urged for peace, asserting that Shimla’s harmony must not be disturbed. The case of illegal construction, which is being contested by the Waqf Board, will be heard in court on Saturday. The mosque’s Imam, Shahzad, maintained that the mosque has been standing since before 1947 and belongs to the Waqf Board.
