Assembly Election Results 2024: SKM secures majority in Sikkim, BJP returns to power in Arunachal Pradesh

For the 60-member Arunachal assembly, the key fight is between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The BJP fielded candidates in all 60 seats, while the Congress contested in only 19 seats.

Update: The vote counting for the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly Elections has concluded with the BJP securing a decisive victory, winning 46 out of 60 seats. The National People's Party (NPEP) secured 5 seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 3 seats, the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) took 2 seats, the Indian National Congress obtained 1 seat, and independent candidates claimed 3 seats.

In the Sikkim Assembly Elections, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, achieved a sweeping victory by securing 31 out of 32 seats. The Sikkim Democratic Front managed to win just 1 seat.


Update: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday retained power in Arunachal Pradesh as it won 38 seats while leading in seven others. In Sikkim, the incumbent SKM has swept the polls, winning 20 seats and leading in 11 seats. 


Update: Sikkim CM and SKM supremo PS Tamang wins from Rhenock assembly seat defeating SDF's Som Nath Poudyal by 7,044 votes. BJP is leading in over half of the seats has been decalred as the winner in 12 assembly seats so far. 


Update: The counting of votes for the Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is being held today. Early trends show the BJP ahead in Arunachal Pradesh and SKM leading in Sikkim.

The counting of votes for the Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is set to begin shortly. The initial trends are expected to come out shortly after the counting starts at 6 am. Arunachal Pradesh, with 60 Assembly seats, and Sikkim, with 32 constituencies, voted on April 19. The total voter turnout in Sikkim was 79.88 per cent while Arunachal Pradesh saw 82.95 per cent voting.

Who will win in Sikkim? 

The key contest in Sikkim is likely to be between the ruling Prem Singh Tamang-led Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and Pawan Kumar Chamling's Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). The BJP and Congress have also fielded candidates for the elections in Sikkim. Among the 146 contestants in fray, prominent candidates include Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his wife Krishna Kumari Rai, former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, former Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, and BJP’s Narendra Kumar Subba. SKM and SDF fielded 32 candidates each, while the BJP had 31 candidates. The Congress contested on 12 seats, and the Citizen Action Party-Sikkim had candidates in 30 seats. In 2019, the SKM, led by Prem Singh Tamang, won 17 seats, while SDF secured 15 seats.

BJP already won 10 seats 

For the 60-member Arunachal assembly, the key fight is between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The BJP fielded candidates in all 60 seats, while the Congress contested in only 19 seats. The National People’s Party (NPP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also fielded candidates in Arunachal Pradesh. The BJP has already won 10 seats unopposed as no other candidates filed nominations in these constituencies, which include Bomdila, Chowkham, Hayuliang, Itanagar, Mukto, Roing, Sagalee, Tali, Taliha, and Ziro-Hapoli. Prominent faces in Arunachal Pradesh include Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, both belonging to BJP. They have already won the election. Other key candidates are Biyuram Wahge (BJP), Ninong Ering (BJP), Karikho Kri (NPP), Pani Taram (BJP), Kumar Wali (Congress), Kamlung Mosang (BJP), Wangki Lowang (BJP), and Jampa Thirnly Kunkhap (Congress).

In the previous Assembly election in 2019, the BJP won 41 seats, Janata Dal (United) bagged seven, NPP won five, Congress four, the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) one, and two Independents also emerged victorious.

What Exit Polls say? 

In Sikkim, according to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll, the ruling SKM is expected to retain power in the state, securing 24-30 seats, marking a significant increase. In Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP is likely to secure a thumping victory, as per exit poll predictions. The saffron party is projected to win 44 to 51 seats in the 60-member state.
