The Indian student Praveen Kumar Gampa aged 27 was discovered dead from gunshot wounds in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Information from The Indian Express reveals that Praveen Kumar Gampa met his end through suspected robbery when he worked at his part-time job.The Consulate General of India Chicago communicated their condolences through an X posting. Who was Praveen Kumar Gampa?

The native of Keshampet mandal in Telangana’s Rangareddy district pursued his studies at the University of Wisconsin as a second-year MS in Data Science student. He left for the United States in August 2023 following his degree completion in BTech from Hyderabad. The US travel of Praveen Gampa began in December 2023 when he returned to India before his departure to the United States on January 20, 2025. Raghavulu explained he missed a call coming from a US number through WhatsApp at exactly 2.50 am Wednesday morning. The morning attempt to reach our son through phone calls remained unanswered. Someone other than Praveen answered the repeated call to the number by asking for his birth date. The sound initially had the signs of a phone scam but we soon dismissed it as a fraud call. Later we discovered through his friends those other callers also received mystery phone calls directing them to come to the area. The police revealed that criminals used a firearm to strike Praveen. The police first mentioned the weapon belonged to a private owner before transforming it into store property and mentioning the event occurred close to the shoreline. The police later delivered an FIR to us which indicated the incident had occurred in a shop area according to their report," he mentioned.
