New Delhi: The case of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar, who went missing in Kolkata on May 13, has taken a horrifying turn with revelations of a brutal murder. Anar, who had come to India on May 12 for medical treatment, was found dead, his body showing signs of extreme mutilation. Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed on Wednesday that three people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
An initial investigation revealed that Anar's skin was peeled, his flesh minced, and turmeric smeared on his body. The Awami League MP was last seen entering a flat in Kolkata's New Town area. The investigation uncovered that he had fallen into a honey trap set by a woman who was also close to one of his friends.
Anar had been living at a relative's house in Bada Nagar near Kolkata. On May 13, he went out for treatment and never returned. His relative, Gopal Bishwas, lodged a missing complaint on May 18, prompting a police investigation. Bloodstains were found at a flat in New Town, leading investigators to suspect foul play.
The probe revealed that Anar might have been lured into the flat by a woman and subsequently murdered by contract killers. His friend Akhtar Razzaman Shaheen, a US citizen, was found to have paid around Rs 5 crore for the crime. The flat where the murder occurred was rented by the MP's close friend, and CCTV footage showed Anar entering with a woman and two men. The trio later left the flat without Anar.
Investigators have identified a young woman named Shilasti Rahman as a key suspect in the murder of Jhenidah-4 minister Anwarul Azim Anar. They believe she was used as a "honey trap" to lure the MP to Kolkata, where the murder took place.
Shilasti Rahman, allegedly involved in the plot, returned to Dhaka with the main suspect, Amanullah Aman, on May 15 after the murder. She is currently in custody and being interrogated by the Detective Branch (DB) of police. A senior DB official revealed that Shilasti is the girlfriend of Akteruzzaman Shahin, the mastermind behind the murder.
According to an official from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s detective branch, Shilasti stayed in a flat within a three-storey building during the murder. After the crime, she allegedly assisted in hiding the body.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that Anar was first strangled and then dismembered. His body was skinned, the flesh removed and minced to prevent identification, and the remains were smeared with turmeric and bleaching powder. The body parts were stored in a refrigerator before being cut into smaller pieces and disposed of across Kolkata.
West Bengal CID detained Jihad Hawladar, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant and butcher from Mumbai. He confessed that he, along with four other Bangladeshi nationals, killed Anar on Shaheen's orders. They then meticulously mutilated the body to destroy evidence.
This shocking case has not only uncovered a gruesome murder but also highlighted the intricate and calculated planning behind it. The arrest of the key suspects and the ongoing investigation continue to reveal more chilling details about the fate of Anwarul Azim Anar.
