Kannada film actor Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru International Airport for allegedly trying to smuggle 14.8 kg of gold worth over Rs 12 crore from Dubai, officers verified on Tuesday.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence( DRI) acted on a tip- off and arrested the actress upon her appearance from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Following her arrest on Monday night, Rao was presented before an profitable offences court, which remanded her to 14 days of judicial guardianship. According to DRI officers, Rao had been under surveillance due to her repeated transnational passages. Authorities noted that she had travelled to Dubai four times within 15 days, raising reservations of lawless conditioning.
Investigators revealed that Rao had allegedly smuggled the gold by concealing gold bars in her apparel and wearing a significant portion of it. Her arrest was pre-planned and targeted upon her arrival. Reports indicate that a large volume of the smuggled gold was hidden inside her jacket. officers suspect that she may have tried to work her connections to shirk customs checks.Reports also suggested that upon wharf, Rao allegedly linked herself as the son of a IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, who is Director General of Police in Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.
She firmly said that she had communicated to original police labor force in an attempt to secure an companion from the field. Authorities are now probing whether any law enforcement officers, including her IPS father, were apprehensive of her conditioning or were misled into aiding her. After her arrest, Rao was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru's HBR Layout for interrogation. Officers are finding out whether the actress acted alone or was part of a larger gold smuggling collation operating between Dubai and India. Ranya Rao, known for her part alongside Kannada megastar Sudeep in Maanikya( 2014), has also appeared in several other South Indian fllims.
