Who is justice Joymalya Bagchi? 33rd judge of the Supreme court

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday (March 17, 2025).The elevation of Justice Bagchi brings the strength of the Supreme Court judges to 33. The vacancy in the court has been brought down to one.

Calcutta High Court 

Justice Bagchi, a judge in the Calcutta High Court before his elevation to the top court, is set to become Chief Justice of India in May 2031. The Collegium of the Supreme Court had sent the name of Justice Bagchi to the government on March 6. The government had given notification of the President's assent to the appointment on March 10.

resolution, had said that since the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir on July 18, 2013, there has been no Chief Justice of India belonging to the Calcutta High Court.The resolution had expressly declared that regional representation was just as significant a consideration as integrity and merit for judicial appointments. Justice Bagchi would have a tenure of over six years before he take up the office of the Chief Justice of India. According to the seniority convention, Justice Bagchi would succeed to the office of the CJI in May 2031 and hold it until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

Judge of the High Court for over 13 years

The Collegium, in focusing on Justice Bagchi, had also kept in mind the fact that currently the Supreme Court Bench was represented by a single Judge from the Calcutta High Court, namely Justice Dipankar Datta. Justice Bagchi was enrolled as a judge of the High Court at Calcutta on 27th June 2011 and posted to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 4th January 2021. He was repatriated back to the Calcutta High Court on 8th November 2021 and is currently operating from there. He has been a judge of the High Court for over 13 years.
