Who is Champai Soren: With the resignation of Hemant Soren as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand amid an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into an alleged land scam, the reins are set to be handed over to Champai Soren. Currently serving as the Transport Minister of Jharkhand, Champai Soren has emerged as the successor to lead the state through these challenging times.

Selection as the Legislative Party Leader

On Wednesday, Jharkhand's Minister Banna Gupta announced, "We have chosen Champai Soren as the leader of the Legislative Party. We came to the Raj Bhawan to request the Governor for the oath ceremony." The decision was reached following the resignation of CM Hemant Soren amidst the ongoing ED investigation.

Political Support and Unity

Congress MLA Rajesh Thakur confirmed the transition, stating, "CM Hemant Soren has decided to resign. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader of the Legislative party... All the MLAs are with us." This unity among party members signals a smooth transition of leadership.

Champai Soren: From Farmer to Political Leader

Champai Soren, the current Transport Minister, is the eldest son of Simal Soren, a farmer from Jilinggoda village in the Saraikela-Kharsawan district. His early life involved working on the family farms, contributing to the agricultural activities alongside his father. Educated up to the 10th grade in a government school, Champai Soren entered into marriage at a young age and is a father to four sons and three daughters.

Jharkhand Movement and Political Initiation

During the late '90s when demands for a separate state of Jharkhand gained momentum, Champai actively participated in the Jharkhand movement, earning the moniker 'Jharkhand Tiger.' He commenced his political journey by becoming an independent MLA through a by-election in the Saraikela constituency and later joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Political Career and Ministerial Roles

Champai Soren served as a Cabinet Minister in the government led by BJP leader Arjun Munda. Holding crucial portfolios, he was in office from September 11, 2010, to January 18, 2013. Subsequently, under the leadership of Hemant Soren, Champai Soren assumed the role of Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Transport in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha government.

As Champai Soren steps into the role of Chief Minister, his journey from a farmer and active participant in the Jharkhand movement to a seasoned political leader underscores the dynamics of Jharkhand's political landscape.
