The full bench of the Election Commission recently convened to discuss the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar held a press conference on Saturday, detailing the commission’s comprehensive preparations for the elections. One of the key initiatives announced was the launch of the “Aaple Mat Aapla Haq” program, designed to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process.

Political parties voice concerns and requests

During his tour of Maharashtra, Kumar engaged with representatives from 11 political parties, including BSP, AAP, CPI, MNS, Shiv Sena, and Shiv Sena UBT. The parties raised various concerns, with a collective request that the election date be scheduled mid-term to avoid the inconveniences experienced during the 2024 general elections. Additionally, there were strong calls for a crackdown on fake news to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

CEC Kumar confident in election management

Kumar expressed confidence that the Maharashtra assembly elections will proceed smoothly, with a total of 100,186 polling booths being set up across the state. He acknowledged that political parties had requested the election dates be announced after the festive season to accommodate voters. The Election Commission has also addressed concerns about the influence of money, the accessibility of polling booths, and the provision of transportation for elderly voters.

Crackdown on fake news and deepfakes

Kumar emphasized the commission’s commitment to combating the spread of fake news and deepfake technology during the election period. He warned that those found guilty of disseminating false information on social media would face strict consequences. In addition, all helicopters used during the election will undergo thorough checks to ensure a temptation-free voting environment.

Key facts about the Maharashtra assembly elections

Maharashtra has a total of 288 assembly constituencies, with 29 reserved for SC and 25 for ST communities. The current assembly's term ends on November 26, necessitating elections before that date. The state has 9.59 crore registered voters, including 19.48 lakh first-time voters. The Election Commission has made significant arrangements, including the installation of CCTVs at all polling booths in urban areas and 50% of booths in rural areas.
