New Delhi: In a shocking case that highlights the dangers of online interactions, the Greater Noida Police has arrested six members of a honeytrap gang. The gang, led by a couple, allegedly lured men into fake relationships only to extort money by threatening them with false rape accusations.

How did the gang operate?

The way in which the gang operated was simple yet deceptive. Young women associated with the gang would develop relationships with men over the phone calls, WhatsApp messages, video calls weaving a web of affection. Once trust was established, the men would be lured into hotel rooms for a meeting. This is where the trap would come into play.

Boyfriend in tow, threats and extortion

Upon reaching the hotel room, the unaware victim would be met not by the girl but by a group of men – including the woman's "boyfriend." This staged encounter would escalate quickly, with the boyfriend threatening to file a false rape case if the victim did not comply with their demands.

Police crackdown and arrests

Acting on a complaint filed by a victim, the Sector Beta-2 police launched an investigation. Through meticulous tracking of mobile phone usage, the police were able to locate and apprehend the gang near Pari Chowk roundabout. Six individuals, including two women, were arrested.

Police looking for trail of victims

During interrogation, the accused confessed to a similar incident perpetrated against another victim 20 days prior near a farmhouse in Sector-135, Noida. The police suspect that the gang may have targeted more individuals, and further investigation is underway to determine the extent of their criminal activity.

This honeytrap case is not the first in Greater Noida. Earlier this year, in March, the Sector-58 police apprehended a different gang that used similar tactics to befriend and extort money from young men.
