Amid rise in diplomatic tensions between the two nations, Canada has recently declared that it would be reducing the number of Indian employees at its diplomatic missions throughout India because it is short-staffed with Canadians who are essential to the efficient running of in-country activities. It is to be noted that this move has come after India expelled 41 Canadian diplomats last year. This action is in retaliation to that action. As a result, Canadas consulates in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chandigarh had stopped conducting in-person business. However, the exact figure of laid-off workers is not known yet, it is understood to be under 100. A media relations representative for the high commission confirmed the staff reductions and apologized for the need for them, citing the departure of Canadian employees the previous year.Canada also extended its sincere gratitude to the local staff in India for their resilience, dedication, and service. It also said that Canada remains committed to providing essential services to Canadians in India, including consular support and facilitating trade and business development, to uphold the longstanding ties between our two nations. It also said that it will continue to work normally at the Canadian visa centres.Despite diplomatic tensions between the two countries, the Canadian government has welcomed Indian citizens for various purposes, including visits, work, study, or permanent residence. The decision by Canada has come after Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly in October removed 41 Canadian diplomats in India. However, India maintained that the move was exercised to establish diplomatic parity.According to the official press release of Minister of External Affairs, the government of India expelled the Canadian diplomats after growing concern at the interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities.
