Uttar Pradesh ordinance against food spitting: In a significant move to enhance food safety and hygiene, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to introduce an ordinance aimed at preventing incidents of spitting in food. This decision follows a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, where senior administrative officials from various departments, including Home, Food and Civil Supplies, and Law, discussed the ordinance's provisions.
Previously, the Uttar Pradesh government mandated that food establishments display the names of their owners and managers prominently. This latest ordinance is part of a broader initiative to address public health concerns surrounding food adulteration and unsanitary practices.
Sources indicate that two ordinances are on the table: tentatively titled the “Prevention of Pseudo and Anti-Harmony Activities and Prohibition of Spitting Ordinance 2024” and the “Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Contamination in Food (Consumer Right to Know) Ordinance 2024.” These measures are designed to include both preventive and punitive actions against those who compromise food safety.
Last month, Chief Minister Adityanath took proactive steps after reports surfaced of food adulteration incidents, which included disturbing claims of spitting or mixing urine into food items. In response, he mandated that food establishments must display the names and addresses of their operators and managers clearly.
According to a government statement, “The names and addresses of the operator, proprietor, manager, and other relevant personnel should be prominently displayed at food establishments. Necessary amendments should be made to the Food Safety and Standards Act to ensure compliance.”
This ordinance aims not only to deter unhygienic practices but also to empower consumers with the right to know about the food they consume.
