New Delhi: The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) took a significant step forward on May 20th with the entry into force of its Charter. This milestone achievement, as highlighted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, paves the way for deeper integration and meaningful cooperation among member countries.
Following the announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Minister Jaishankar took to social media (previously known as Twitter) to express his views. "The entry into force of the BIMSTEC Charter reaffirms India's unwavering commitment to building a prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable neighborhood," he wrote. "This achievement is rooted in our shared history, culture, vision, and mutual respect for one another."
The MEA's earlier message on the same platform had hailed the BIMSTEC Charter as a "significant milestone." The message emphasized the Charter's role in establishing a legal and institutional framework for cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. It further highlighted the ability to forge agreements with other countries and organizations, fostering wider partnerships.
As per the MEA's social media post, the Charter serves to articulate the long-term vision and priorities envisioned by member states. This comprehensive framework paves the way for enhanced collaboration across various sectors in the region.
Nepal, one of the seven member states of BIMSTEC, completed the domestic implementation process on May 20th. This action, following the House of Representatives' approval on April 2nd, signifies the fulfillment of all necessary conditions for the Charter's effectiveness.
The BIMSTEC Charter's entry into force marks a new chapter for regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal. With a solidified framework for collaboration and a shared vision for prosperity, member countries can now embark on a journey of deeper economic, technical, and social integration.
