New Delhi: Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh stirred controversy on Wednesday by questioning the ongoing protest by doctors against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh provocatively asked how the nation would react if soldiers guarding the borders decided to protest against the Pulwama attack, where 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives in 2019.

Ghosh appeals to end strike

In a post on X, Ghosh expressed his concerns about the doctors' strike, urging them to reconsider their decision and return to work. He stated, "There has been no justice in the Pulwama case. If jawans leave the borders and start a 'we want justice' protest, how would the public perceive it?"

Ghosh’s remarks come at a time when the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is facing severe criticism from the opposition. The BJP has demanded Banerjee’s resignation, holding her accountable for the crime that has sparked nationwide outrage among the medical community.

Supreme court intervenes

The ongoing protests by thousands of doctors across the country have drawn the attention of the Supreme Court, which on Tuesday assured the medical professionals that their grievances would be addressed. The court also urged the doctors to call off their strike and return to their duties, emphasizing the importance of patient care.

In its directives, the Supreme Court instructed the West Bengal government not to use force against the protesters. The court also criticized the Bengal police for their delayed response, noting that the murder FIR was filed three hours after the victim's body was handed over to her family.

Investigation underway

The trainee doctor’s brutal death occurred after she went to the seminar hall of the hospital to rest during a grueling 36-hour shift. The next morning, she was found dead. The police have since arrested a civic volunteer for the crime, while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to investigate the case. The agency is currently probing whether the murder was part of a larger conspiracy and is considering subjecting the main accused and the former principal of RG Kar College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, to polygraph tests.
