Another row erupted after the Uttar Pradesh government in Muzaffarnagar asked the eateries to display the names of their owners along the Kanwar Yatra route to avoid any confusion among yatris. The officials added that the decision had been taken to ensure that there is no confusion among kanwariyas as they abstain themselves from certain diets when they carry River Ganges water with them.

What about common names, says Akhilesh Yadav

Responding to this, the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav lashed out at the government saying that how they would differentiate with the names. Taking it to his X handle, Yadav mentioned, “…and what will be known from the name of the one whose name is Guddu, Munna, Chhotu or Fatte?”

In his tweet, he asked the court to take suo motu cognizance and investigate the intentions of the government behind such administration. He also demanded an appropriate punitive action against such order. He alleged that with such orders government is trying to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of harmony among people.

Muzaffarnagar Police says it’s Voluntarily Display

Responding to the row, Muzaffarnagar Police on Thursday said that the police have urged all the eateries to "voluntarily display" the names of their owners and employees, adding that the intention of this order is not to create any kind of "religious discrimination" but only to facilitate the devotees.

While speaking to ANI, DIG Saharanpur Ajay Kumar Sahni said, "Instances have come to light earlier that Kanwarias had arguments over rate list for food at hotels and dhabas. Besides this, there have been instances where non-veg is available at some hotel/dhaba or a person of some other community has opened a hotel/dhaba under some other name and this has led to issues. In the wake of that, it was decided that the name of the proprietor/owner of shops/hotels/dhabas would be written clearly on the boards, rate lists would be written clearly and names of workers would also be written clearly so that no issues of any kind arise...Talks had been held with everyone, and all hotels/dhabas have agreed to it...This has been decided for our Kanwar route..."

Not only Samajwadi Party chief, but Assadudin Owaisi, the chief of AIMIM has also slammed the Uttar Pradesh police for taking such decision. "As per the order of the Uttar Pradesh Police, now every food shop or cart owner will have to put his name on the board so that no Kanwadia buys anything from a Muslim shop by mistake. This was called Apartheid in South Africa and in Hitler's Germany, it was called 'Judenboycott'," Owaisi posted on X.
