West Bengal News: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of manipulating the market to cause a significant spike in onion prices across the state. Purulia MP and BJP West Bengal State General Secretary, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, addressed the issue in a letter to Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi. Mahato claimed that Banerjees “calculated manipulation” was the key reason behind the skyrocketing onion prices, which have surged to as much as ₹75 per kilogram.Mamatas alleged onion scamThe BJP MPs letter, titled Mamatas Onion Scam - An Urgent Appeal to Investigate the Price Manipulation of Onions in West Bengal, leveled serious accusations against Banerjee. Mahato detailed how the reopening of the Jharkhand-West Bengal border, initially blocked for food-related concerns, had failed to ease the soaring onion prices, suggesting the rise was a deliberate move.Hoarding and political tiesMahato also highlighted that politically connected hoarders, many with close ties to Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, were manipulating the cold storage and wholesale supply chains. He alleged that these individuals had created an artificial scarcity by hoarding onions to drive up prices, taking advantage of the border situation. In his letter, Mahato demanded an urgent investigation into the “Mamatas Onion Scam,” urging authorities to closely monitor the market and regulate the situation to prevent further inflation. As of now, there has been no official response from the TMC regarding these allegations.
