The West Bengal BJP chief, Sukanta Majumdar, sustained injuries during a clash between party workers and police while attempting to travel to Sandeshkhali. This area has seen ongoing protests by women alleging atrocities committed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.

Earlier, police prevented Majumdar from leaving a guest house in Taki, North 24 Parganas district, and imposed section 144 in Sandeshkhali. Despite this, BJP leaders persisted in their march towards Sandeshkhali, resulting in confrontations with law enforcement.

The incident follows clashes between police and BJP supporters in Basirhat, near Sandeshkhali, as the BJP announced plans to protest the situation there. The BJP attempted to gherao the Superintendent of Police's office in Basirhat, leading to further clashes and police lathi charges.

Sukanta Majumdar denounced the situation as lawlessness in Bengal, while the Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of destabilizing the state.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the government was closely monitoring the Sandeshkhali situation and assured that necessary actions were being taken. She emphasized that anyone could visit Sandeshkhali and reiterated the government's commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the protesters.

The women protesters allege that Shajahan Sheikh and his associates forcibly seized their land and subjected them to sexual harassment. Sheikh has been missing since January following an attack on an Enforcement Directorate team during a raid on his house in connection with a ration scam.
