Weather alert: IMD issues red alert for Maharashtra, Gujarat; Showers likely in Delhi-NCR

IMD has issued a red alert for Telangana, central Maharashtra, coastal Goa, and Gujarat for Saturday. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kutch, and Saurashtra for the weekend, forecasting heavy rainfall of 115-120 mm over the next 24 hours.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa for Saturday, anticipating heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in these regions. The forecast comes amidst predictions of continued intense rainfall across Gujarat and southern peninsular India until Sunday. The weather agency also predicted that light, isolated rainfall will continue in Delhi for three days. The minimum temperature in Delhi-NCR is predicted to be around 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Earlier this week, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression and has since moved towards Odisha. As of Friday, the depression is situated near Puri, Gopalpur, and Paradip, gradually heading northwestwards.

Depression is expected to cross 

According to IMD's latest bulletin, the depression is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri as a depression on Saturday morning. Subsequently, it will move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, gradually losing strength.

Alerts issued across multiple states

In anticipation of the depression's movement, IMD has issued a red alert for Telangana, central Maharashtra, coastal Goa, and Gujarat for Saturday. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kutch, and Saurashtra for the weekend, forecasting heavy rainfall of 115-120 mm over the next 24 hours.

Impact across South and East India

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and eastern Rajasthan over the next three days. In coastal Andhra Pradesh, where heavy downpours continue, IMD has issued a ‘signal 3’ port warning in Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, and Kakinada, alerting vessels to potential cyclonic conditions.

Cumulative rainfall reached 324.5 mm

As of July 19, the cumulative rainfall across India from June 1 has reached 324.4 mm, which is 98 percent of the normal level for this period. Fifteen states and Union Territories have reported normal to above-normal rainfall, indicating a relatively stable monsoon pattern across the country.
