New Delhi: West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) announced the suspension of three doctors linked to the former principal Sandip Ghosh of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on Saturday. The suspended doctors identified as Avik De, Birupaksha Biswas and Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick. Avik De previously served as the Resident Medical Officer of the Radiodiagnosis Department at Burdwan Medical College. Birupaksha Biswas held the position of senior resident doctor in the Pathology Department at the same college. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick is a junior doctor at Midnapore Medical College & Hospital.

Allegations of "threat culture" among junior doctors

The common accusation against these doctors is their alleged abuse of their connections with Sandip Ghosh and influential figures in the ruling party to intimidate and harass junior doctors at their respective hospitals. This misconduct came to light following accusations related to a rape and murder case involving a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College. According to the allegations, De and Biswas fostered a "threat culture," where junior doctors and interns were coerced into complying with their demands under duress.

Health department suspends two officials

The West Bengal Health Department announced the suspension of Avik De and Birupaksha Biswas on September 5. Additionally, De is undergoing a departmental investigation. Biswas’s suspension came shortly after his transfer from Burdwan Medical College to Kakdwip Sub-divisional Hospital. This swift action underscores the gravity of the charges and the commitment of the health authorities to address the issue.

At Midnapore Medical College & Hospital, junior doctors recently protested against Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick for similar reasons. The allegations against him involve creating a hostile environment and intimidating junior staff.

Ex-principal Sandip Ghosh under scrutiny

In a related development, the WBMC has issued a show-cause notice to Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to alleged financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College. Ghosh has been given three days to respond to the notice, failing which his medical registration might be cancelled.
