Wayanad landslides: Death toll crosses 250; Over 100 bodies recovered, casualties may increase, claim officials

More than 300 people are still missing in massive landslide that wreaked havoc in Wayanad district. The death toll has crossed 250 so far and casualties may increase, as per officials.

Rescue officials making bridge in landslide hit Wayanad (X/ABharatBhushanBabu)

In the aftermath of the Wayanad landslide, Major General VT Mathew while speaking to ANI has reported that 100 bodies have been recovered so far, but the overall body count is expected to be much higher. According to the officials, at least 250 people have lost their lives in the natural disaster. 

The landslide, which occurred in the Wayanad district of Kerala, has caused significant destruction and loss of life. 

During the search and rescue operation in Wayanad, Kerala, Major General Mathew stated, "Over 500 soldiers have been deployed here. Out of these, 350 are dedicated to the rescue efforts, while an additional 160 are part of our bridge team. We have transported a 220-foot bridge from Bengaluru, which is expected to be completed by this afternoon and opened for traffic. This bridge is crucial for the operation. All individuals trapped outside have been rescued. Our next step is to check if anyone is trapped inside their homes. There are reports of more than 300 people missing, and we will thoroughly search every house and location. We are fully committed to the rescue mission."

Rescue by Indian Army and other teams

According to the sources, the Indian Army in close coordination with NDRF, IAF, Coast Guard, Indian Navy, Kerala State Rescue Teams & Civil Administration, for the rescue operations in the calamity hit Wayanad and Meppadi.

Reportedly, more than 1,000 affected individuals have been rescued so far. A Control Centre, co-located with the State Administrative Control Room, has been established in Mepaddi. Apart from this, the bridging sites have been identified in affected areas to restore connectivity by the Engineer Task Force. Bridging assets along with three Rescue Dog Teams dogs have been airlifted from Delhi.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities working to locate and recover additional victims amid the challenging conditions.

Priyanka, Rahul Gandhi to visit landslide hit area

Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi have also left for Wayanad on Thursday to take stock of the situation. Earlier, they both cancelled the plan due to extreme weather conditions. According to the sources, former Wayanad MP will meet the people affected by natural calamity.
