Water doesn’t belong to any individual: DK Shivakumar on Bengaluru water crisis

Karnataka chief minister and deputy CM called for a critical meet to address the water crisis in the state and said that Vrishabhavati Lift Irrigation Project in the Nelamangala Assembly Constituency will help solving the issue.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and cabinet ministers, along with the officials of the respective departments called for a critical meeting on Monday to address the shortage of drinking water in Bengaluru.

According to the sources, DK Shivakumar, the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister warned the water tanker owners to register with the authorities before the deadline of March 7, else their tankers will be seized. 
As per official data, only 10%, that is 219 tankers have registered with the government. He also addressed the issue of rising prices of water tankers, who charge Rs 500 to Rs 2000 per tanker and said that authorities are in talks with the vendors to fix the price. 

While speaking to media reporters he highlighted that drying up of borewells in the state. Shivakumar said, “We have identified that 50% of the borewells have dried up. There is a big problem." 

Shivakumar said, “About 14,700 borewells in Bengaluru and 6,997 have dried up whereas around 7,784 are working. Water doesn’t belong to any individual, it’s for everyone. We are creating a war room. All the officials will try and come up with a solution. We will also fix a common price for water tankers. Rs 556 crores have been allocated for water supply.”

Meanwhile, the chief minister of Karnataka on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Vrishabhavati Lift Irrigation Project in the Nelamangala Assembly Constituency and highlighted that project will be an end to the water problems faced by the people of Bengaluru City, the surrounding rural areas, and the Tumkur districts. The project will be Rs 3000 crore, as per sources.
