New Delhi: In the midst of heated debates surrounding the screening of the contentious film 'The Kerala Story' at various churches, a different narrative unfolded as a church in Kochi opted to showcase a documentary shedding light on the Manipur riots. Titled "Manipur Cry of the Oppressed," the screening took place at St. Joseph Church in Sanjopuram, under the jurisdiction of Ernakulam's Angamaly Archdiocese. The event, slated from 9:30 am onwards, catered specifically to students enrolled in Bible schools.

Importance of educating children with historical contexts

Reverend Nidhin Panavelil, the vicar of the church, expressed satisfaction in providing over 100 Bible school students with the opportunity to view the documentary. He emphasized the importance of educating children about the historical context and implications of the Manipur riots. In addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding 'The Kerala Story,' Rev. Panavelil remarked that the film aligns with the ideological agenda of certain political factions and remains unaffected by endorsements from individual churches or dioceses.

Diverging opinions within Christian communities

The rift within Christian sects continues to widen amidst debates surrounding the screening of 'The Kerala Story.' Critics, including representatives from both the LDF and UDF, denounce the film as anti-Kerala, anti-Muslim, and aligned with the RSS' agenda. The screening of the film initially sparked controversy when it was showcased in the Diocese of Idukki, upon the invitation of the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement. Subsequently, the Diocese of Thamarassery also contemplated screening the film before retracting its decision.

Kerala Bishops Council defends the film

The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council's Vigilance Commission defended the film as a cautionary measure aimed at steering youth away from pitfalls in romantic relationships. This stance found support from the Syro Malabar Church. However, dissenting voices, epitomized by Geevarghese Mor Coorilos, former Metropolitan of Niranam Diocese of Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church, criticize the film's portrayal as a fabrication driven by political motives.

Intricate dynamics at play

The controversy surrounding the screening of 'The Kerala Story' underscores the intricate dynamics at play within religious communities. As various factions within the Christian community voice differing perspectives, the broader implications of such cultural and ideological clashes come to the fore. In navigating these complexities, stakeholders grapple with reconciling divergent viewpoints while upholding principles of free expression and communal harmony.
