New Delhi: A heartbreaking incident has unfolded in Shahdol district, Madhya Pradesh, where an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) lost his life in the line of duty. The ASI, identified as Mahendra Bagri, was allegedly crushed to death by a tractor carrying illegally mined sand on Saturday.

Police ambush turns deadly

According to reports, ASI Mahendra Bagri along with two other officers were on an operation in Naudhiya locality to apprehend a suspect. While waiting for the suspect, a tractor laden with sand approached them. The police suspected the sand to be illegally mined. Tragically, the tractor driver allegedly did not stop despite signals, instead crushing ASI Mahendra Bagri under the wheels.

FIR registered, main accused absconding

The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including murder (302), criminal act by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34), assisting in concealment of stolen property (414), and theft (379). Additionally, relevant sections of mining laws have been invoked.

Speaking to the press, ADG (Shahdol) D.C. Sagar expressed grief over the incident, calling it "heart-wrenching." A manhunt has been launched for the absconding main accused, Surendra Singh, who reportedly resides in the Beohari region, approximately 40 kilometers from Shahdol. The police have announced a reward of Rs. 30,000 for information leading to his arrest.

MP Congress president responds

The incident has sparked outrage, with Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitendra Kumar Patwari criticizing the state government. He accused the administration of presiding over a regime of "debt, crime, and corruption." Highlighting data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Patwari claimed that 17 rape cases occur daily in the state. He further alleged that attempts are made to silence him through FIRs when he raises such issues.
