New Delhi: A tragic accident in Pune has sparked outrage, raising questions about underage drinking, reckless driving, and the consequences of both. CCTV footage has emerged showing a 17-year-old boy, moments before the crash that claimed the lives of two people, celebrating his Class 12 results with friends at a pub – a table overflowing with alcohol bottles a stark reminder of the night's events.

The teenager, barely four months shy of turning 18, was allegedly speeding in his Porsche when he collided with a motorcycle carrying a young couple – Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta – who were both engineers working in Pune. The impact was fatal, leaving behind a trail of grief and unanswered questions.

Celebration turns into tragedy: A night fueled by alcohol

The CCTV footage paints a chilling picture. While details about the extent of the teenager's intoxication remain under investigation, the presence of alcohol at the pub raises serious concerns. The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25, making serving alcohol to a minor a clear violation. The Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, has confirmed that a case has been registered against both the boy's father and the owner of the pub for their respective roles in this tragedy.

An X user Archana More Patil posted a video of Vedant drinking inside a pub. She wrote, "It has come to light that Vedant Aggarwal's Alcohol test has come negative. But in this video, he is clearly seen partying with his friends. So was Vedanta given a false report? Will action be taken against those giving false reports?"

A pattern of recklessness

Reports suggest that witnesses described the teenager and his friends as being "heavily drunk." This, coupled with the alleged speeding, paints a picture of reckless disregard for human life. The teenager, despite the severity of the accident, secured bail within 15 hours.

Seeking justice

The Pune Police have expressed their disappointment with the bail granted to the juvenile. They had reportedly argued for him to be tried as an adult, considering the severity of the crime. The bail conditions, however, include writing an essay on road safety, collaborating with traffic police, undergoing alcohol rehabilitation, and seeking psychiatric counseling.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of underage drinking, reckless driving, and the ease with which the law can sometimes be circumvented. The ongoing investigation and the case filed against the pub owner and the teenager's father are a step towards accountability, but they cannot bring back the lives lost.
