President Droupadi Murmu extended a formal invitation to Narendra Modi on Friday, marking the commencement of the process of forming the new government at the Centre. Modi, chosen as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is set to embark on his third consecutive term as prime minister. In a traditional gesture, President Murmu offered 'dahi-cheeni' (sweet curd) to Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

In Indian customs, consuming 'dahi-cheeni' holds auspicious significance, symbolizing the commencement of important endeavors or ventures. The ritual, performed by President Murmu, signifies the auspicious beginning of Modi's tenure as Prime Minister-designate.

Formal appointment process

As per constitutional procedures outlined in Article 75, President Murmu appointed Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister-designate, recognizing the NDA's majority in the Lok Sabha. Modi's formal appointment was sealed with the handover of the letter of appointment during the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Modi's oath-taking ceremony preparations

The new government, led by Prime Minister Modi, is slated to take oath on Sunday evening. It is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, at 7:15 PM at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

NDA's future plans

Earlier, NDA leaders conveyed their support for Modi to President Murmu, endorsing his leadership as the head of the NDA Parliamentary Party. Modi expressed gratitude for his appointment as Prime Minister-designate, outlining his vision for the future and the significant role of the 18th Lok Sabha in realizing the nation's aspirations, particularly leading up to India's centennial celebrations in 2047.

Majority mandate

With the BJP-led NDA securing 293 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the coalition enjoys a comfortable majority in the 543-member House, affirming Modi's mandate to lead the country for another term.
