New Delhi: An intense verbal exchange erupted between Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and advocate Mathews Nedumpara during the Supreme Court hearing on the Electoral Bond case, which took place on March 18. A video capturing their heated confrontation has since gone viral across social media platforms.

Advocate's assertion

Advocate Mathews Nedumpara asserted during the hearing that the entire judgment pertaining to the Electoral Bond case was rendered without the knowledge of the citizens. Despite attempts by the judges to convey their differing views, Nedumpara continued to speak over them and raise his voice.

CJI's response

In response to Nedumpara's persistent vocalization, CJI DY Chandrachud sternly instructed him not to raise his voice, stating, "DON'T SHOUT AT ME! If you want to move an application, file an application. WE ARE NOT HEARING YOU."

Contempt warning

Subsequently, Justice Gavai intervened, warning Nedumpara of potential contempt, asking, "You want contempt notice?"

Supreme Court's directive to SBI

During the hearing, the Supreme Court adopted a firm stance against the State Bank of India (SBI) concerning the electoral bond case. The court questioned the bank's reluctance to provide information regarding electoral bonds.

Directives to SBI

The court mandated SBI to furnish the bond numbers and submit an affidavit by Thursday evening affirming that they have no further information to disclose. The directive stemmed from the court's previous ruling on February 15, compelling SBI to disclose comprehensive details regarding electoral bonds, including purchase/redemption dates, purchaser/recipient names, and denominations.

Upholding transparency

Justice Chandrachud emphasized the court's commitment to ensuring the logical and complete disclosure of information regarding the electoral bond scheme. The directive underscores the court's unwavering dedication to transparency and accountability in political funding processes.

The Supreme Court's assertive stance and insistence on transparent disclosure regarding electoral bonds signify a pivotal step towards upholding the principles of democracy and accountability in India's political landscape.
