In a shocking turn of events on Thursday, a 21-year-old woman's death has sparked controversy and suspicions of an honor killing. The young woman's boyfriend claimed that her death was a result of her father’s opposition to their relationship. The body of the woman was discovered in a lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru, and the police identified her as R. Sahana, a resident of Harohalli, near Hosur.

Father's initial statement

The woman's father, Ramamoorthy, had initially filed a report with the police, explaining that while traveling with his daughter on Tuesday, their two-wheeler lost control and plunged into a lake. He insisted that the incident was an accident, adding that his daughter drowned because she could not swim. According to a senior police officer, Ramamoorthy lodged the complaint shortly after the incident.

Boyfriend's allegation of honour killing

However, the victim’s boyfriend, Nithin, has refuted the father's version of events. He claimed that Sahana’s death was an honor killing, accusing her father of intentionally pushing her into the lake due to his disapproval of their relationship. Nithin further alleged that Ramamoorthy had invited him to a friend’s house in Hebbagodi on Sunday night, where he witnessed Sahana being beaten by her father. Despite the assault, Sahana reportedly stood firm in her decision to marry Nithin.

Father's confession during police interrogation

During questioning, Ramamoorthy admitted to feeling distressed upon learning about his daughter's relationship. However, he continued to deny any foul play, maintaining that his daughter’s death occurred due to her inability to swim. He also mentioned that he lost control of his vehicle because he had fallen asleep while riding.

The police have registered a case of death by negligence and stated that a thorough investigation is underway. They are working to determine whether this tragic incident was an accident or an honor killing.
