New Delhi: In a shocking case of alleged sorcery-related abuse, surgeons at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha's Burla successfully extracted a total of 77 needles embedded in the skull of a 19-year-old woman, Reshma Behera from Ichgaon. The discovery came to light after Reshma was admitted to address severe headaches, which led to the shocking revelation.
Director Bhabagrahi Rath disclosed that 70 needles were initially removed during a complex surgical procedure. A subsequent follow-up surgery on Saturday extracted an additional seven needles. Remarkably, while the needles caused soft tissue injuries, they mercifully did not penetrate or damage any bone structures.
Reshma's recovery progress is under close medical scrutiny, with ongoing observation to monitor her condition for potential complications post-surgery. Medical experts underscored the importance of conducting thorough diagnostic evaluations before conclusively attributing any underlying issues to psychological factors. "Reshma will continue to receive intensive post-operative care for approximately one week," mentioned one of the attending physicians.
The ordeal traces back to Reshma's decision to seek assistance from a sorcerer in 2021, amidst prolonged health issues following her mother's demise four years ago. The revelation of the needles came to light only recently when Reshma began experiencing acute pain, prompting her transfer from Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital to VIMSAR for specialized treatment.
In response to the distressing case, the Odisha police have launched an investigation. A quack allegedly involved in the needle piercing has been apprehended, with authorities intensifying efforts to determine if there are other victims affected by similar practices. The inquiry aims to uncover the full extent of the abuse and ensure justice for Reshma and potentially others impacted by the shocking ordeal.
