New Delhi: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has once again postponed its verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s eligibility for a joint silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Initially expected on August 13, the decision has now been deferred to August 16, with the announcement scheduled for 6:00 pm Paris time.

Vinesh Phogat, who was a strong contender for gold in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling category, faced disqualification due to failing to meet the weight requirement. Despite cutting her initial bout, Vinesh weighed in 2.7 kg above the limit on the night before her final match against USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. Despite her best efforts to shed the extra weight, Vinesh was still 100 grams over the limit on the morning of the final, leading to her disqualification.

Phogat appealed to the CAS, requesting to be awarded a joint silver medal, given that she had reached the finals under legitimate circumstances. The CAS allowed all parties involved to submit their final arguments by August 11, the last day of the Paris Games, but the verdict has been delayed repeatedly.

The repeated postponements have left the Indian sports community in suspense, as Phogat’s future in the sport hangs in the balance. The wrestler has already announced her retirement on social media platform 'X' following the disqualification, marking a bittersweet end to her career.
