In a significant political development, senior BJP leader Vijender Gupta has been appointed as the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. This appointment marks a dramatic turn in Delhi’s political landscape, particularly given Gupta’s past experiences in the same Assembly, where he was previously escorted out multiple times by marshals. Now, he will be the one presiding over its proceedings.

BJP’s return to power and Gupta’s key role

After 27 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has regained power in Delhi, and by appointing Vijender Gupta as Speaker, the party has reshaped the political balance in the state. Notably, former Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and ex-Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are no longer part of the Assembly. Gupta, who successfully won the Rohini seat even during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wave in 2015 and 2020, is now set to lead the very Assembly that once saw his expulsion. His appointment symbolizes a political shift and strategic consolidation for the BJP.

Three consecutive wins from Rohini

Vijender Gupta, a prominent leader from the Baniya community, secured his third consecutive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. He defeated AAP candidate Pradeep Mittal by a margin of over 37,000 votes. Having served as the former president of the Delhi BJP unit and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Gupta brings significant experience to his new role as Speaker.

A remarkable political journey

Gupta’s political career has been both long and eventful:

  • Born on August 14, 1963, he graduated from Shri Ram College of Commerce.

  • He entered politics in 1980 through the Janata Vidyarthi Morcha.

  • In 1995, he became the president of BJP’s youth wing.

  • His first electoral victory came in 1997 when he was elected as an MCD councilor.

  • In 2009, he contested the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat but lost to Congress leader Kapil Sibal.

  • He suffered a setback in the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections against Arvind Kejriwal but made a strong comeback in 2015, winning from Rohini.

  • He retained his seat in the 2020 and 2025 Assembly elections, further strengthening his political stature.

Challenges ahead as assembly speaker

As the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Gupta faces the crucial task of maintaining order and impartiality in legislative proceedings. Despite the BJP’s majority in the Assembly, challenges from the opposition will persist. His ability to manage the house effectively and uphold democratic principles will be closely watched in the coming years.
