Pandit Sanjay Ram Marathe, a celebrated classical singer and harmonium virtuoso, passed away at the age of 68 in Thane, Maharashtra. His family confirmed that the artist suffered a severe heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital, where he breathed his last on Sunday night, December 15, 2024.

The eldest son of the legendary musician Pandit Ram Marathe, Sanjay Marathe was a towering figure in Indian classical music and Marathi musical theatre. Known for his expertise in harmonium and soulful singing, he earned widespread respect and admiration in the music community.

A legacy rooted in music

Pandit Sanjay Marathe dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Indian classical music. He actively participated in events commemorating the birth centenary of his father earlier this year. His performances were a blend of technical mastery and emotive expression, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike.

In collaboration with his younger brother Mukund Marathe, he revived the iconic Marathi musical play Sangeet Mandarmala. The production was reimagined as part of the centenary celebrations for Pandit Ram Marathe. Their innovative approach preserved the traditional essence of Marathi musical theatre while introducing modern elements, receiving widespread acclaim.
