His legacy includes iconic films such as Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), Mammo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996), and Zubeidaa (2001), all of which are known for their bold narratives and authenticity. Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, including renowned actors such as Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Rajit Kapur, along with filmmaker-actor Kunal Kapoor.
