Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the pioneers of English news presentation on the national broadcaster passes away in Delhi on Wednesday. Notably, Aiyar was one of the finest news anchors on the national broadcast channel Doordarshan in that era.

Aiyer served the industry for more than 30 years with her journalism, during which she garnered significant acclaim.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, taking it to Twitter expressed hailed the services of the veteran anchor and expressed grief on her demise. Thakur wrote, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the first and finest English news anchors on Doordarshan and All India Radio. A trailblazer & pioneer, she brought credibility, professionalism, and a distinct voice to every news report, leaving an indelible mark in the journalism and broadcasting industries. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

In 1971, Gitanjali Aiyar began her illustrious career with national television, where she won four awards for outstanding anchor. She was also honoured with the prestigious Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989.

After serving as a remarkable journalist, Aiyar left the channel in August 2002 and joined corporate communications, government liaison, and marketing. During her tenure, she also served as a consultant at CII and tried her luck in acting through the serial ‘Khandaan.”
