Shovel attack in Varanasi: In a shocking incident on Thursday evening, Prakash Manjhi from Moram district in Nepal assaulted five individuals with a shovel at Revdi Talab, leading to two FIRs being filed against him at the Bhelupur police station. The charges include attempted murder and other serious offenses.
Inspector Vijay Kumar Shukla confirmed that the accused, Prakash Manjhi, is currently undergoing a medical examination, after which he will be sent to jail. However, Manjhi's statements during questioning have been incoherent, with him frequently talking about irrelevant matters. The police also plan to verify his background from his home in Nepal.
According to witnesses, Manjhi got off an e-rickshaw at Revdi Talab, picked up a shovel from a nearby shop, and began his attack. His first victim was local meat shop owner Ansar Ahmed. Manjhi then went on to injure four other individuals, including a man named Shahid, all at the same location.
The local residents quickly intervened, overpowering Manjhi and handing him over to the police. In the aftermath of the attack, around 500 people gathered to protest the incident. Given the tensions, additional police forces from six stations were deployed to the area to maintain law and order, with the heavy police presence lasting until late Thursday night.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the police are working to uncover more details about Manjhi's motives. His mental state and connections to his home in Nepal will also be examined in the course of the verification process. Authorities are treating the case as highly sensitive due to the violent nature of the attack and the public unrest that followed.
