Concerns over water quality at Triveni Sangam during Maha Kumbh 2025 have sparked a heated debate among officials and environmentalists. As Maha Kumbhradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami defend the water's purity, a report from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) raises alarm over faecal contamination.
In a recent assembly session, CM Yogi Adityanath firmly rejected claims of faecal contamination in the waters of Triveni Sangam, asserting that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the water's safety for millions of devotees. He stated that the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) is actively monitoring water quality and has implemented purification processes for the water entering the Sangam.
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami echoed similar sentiments, criticizing opposition leaders for questioning the water quality. He emphasized that the ongoing Maha Kumbh is a significant spiritual event, and such rumors could undermine its sanctity. Dhami expressed confidence in the arrangements made under the leadership of PM Modi and CM Adityanath.
Despite these assurances, a CPCB report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) indicated that faecal coliform levels in some areas exceeded permissible limits, casting doubt on the safety of taking a holy dip. The report highlighted that many locations did not meet bathing standards during monitoring conducted earlier this month.
Environmental scientists have weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that while certain data may be concerning, other indicators such as dissolved oxygen levels are within acceptable ranges. They call for further investigation to clarify the situation and ensure public safety during this massive religious gathering. As Maha Kumbh 2025 continues, the debate over water quality at Triveni Sangam remains a focal point, balancing faith with environmental responsibility.
