The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday issued a notification for the formation of a State Capital Region (SCR) on the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR), it typically means that the government is creating a designated area surrounding the state capital with the intention of planned development and coordinated governance.

According to the sources, the state government issued a notification on Friday for the formation of a state capital region (SCR) that would include Lucknow and five other adjoining districts along the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR). The SCR will comprise districts Lucknow, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Sitapur and Barabanki covering an area of 27,860 sq km.

Notably, the project was inaugurated by Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in September 2022. As per sources, the decision has been taken keeping the increased population in the capital and surrounding districts, and this will help the administration to emphasize complaints about unplanned development.

Here’s how it may help the state:

Regional Development: The SCR aims to promote balanced and planned development in the region surrounding the state capital. This includes infrastructure development such as roads, transportation networks, housing projects, and industrial zones.

Coordination: Like the NCR around Delhi, an SCR would facilitate better coordination among neighbouring districts and local governments. This can lead to unified policies on land use, environment protection, and urban planning.

Governance: There might be a unified authority or body overseeing the SCR, which can help streamline decision-making processes and facilitate quicker implementation of development projects.

Economic Growth: By concentrating development efforts in a specific region, SCRs can attract investment, boost economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

The SCR concept often involves improving connectivity between the state capitals and surrounding areas through enhanced transport links like highways, railways, and possibly even metro systems. Overall, forming a State Capital Region on the lines of the National Capital Region means creating a structured framework to foster holistic development around the state capital, aiming to replicate the successes seen in and around India’s national capital region.
