New Delhi: A resident of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh, Tushar Saxena, was left baffled when he was slapped with a ₹1,000 fine by the Noida traffic police. The charge? Driving his car without a helmet. Mr. Saxena, who claims he has never driven his vehicle to Gautam Buddh Nagar district, initially received a text message regarding the fine, which he dismissed as a mistake. However, after receiving both an email and another message, he decided to look into the matter.

To his surprise, upon contacting the traffic police, he was informed that he had been fined for operating his four-wheeler without a helmet. This bizarre situation escalated when he was warned that failure to pay the fine could result in a court appearance. “The challan was issued on November 9, 2023. If you’re violating traffic rules, receiving a fine is common, but that’s not my case. I have never driven my car to the NCR area. And if there’s any rule that says we have to wear a helmet inside a car, then the authorities must give this to me in writing,” Mr. Saxena said.

Mr. Saxena’s vehicle, which was originally registered in Ghaziabad, was transferred to Rampur after he purchased it in March last year. He has appealed to the Noida traffic police to investigate the matter and revoke the fine. This isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred. In Jhansi, another car owner, Bahadur Singh Parihar, was fined ₹1,000 for not wearing a helmet while driving his Audi. Despite approaching the police, he was told the issue would be resolved only after the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Until then, Mr. Parihar humorously resorted to wearing a bike helmet while driving his car to avoid further fines.
