On Tuesday, the Northern Railways announced a significant change in Uttar Pradesh’s railway infrastructure. The Competent Authority has approved the renaming of eight railway stations in the Lucknow division. This decision is part of a broader initiative to update the station names, reflecting cultural and historical significance.

New Names of Railway Stations

The affected stations and their new names are as follows:

  • Kasimpur Halt is now Jais City.
  • Jais has been renamed to Guru Gorakhnath Dham.
  • Misrauli will now be called Maa Kalikan Dham.
  • Bani has been changed to Swami Paramhans.
  • Nihalgarh is now Maharaja Bijli Pasi.
  • Akbarganj will be known as Maa Ahorva Bhawani Dham.
  • Wazirganj Halt is renamed to Amar Shaheed Bhale Sultan.
  • Fursatganj has been changed to Tapeshwarnath Dham.

Despite these changes, the numerical codes assigned to these stations in the "Alphabetical List of Railway Stations in India" by IRCA, New Delhi, will remain the same. The Secretary-General/IRCA New Delhi will issue the necessary corrections for these modifications.

Political Response to the Changes

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav has voiced strong criticism regarding the renaming initiative. In a social media post, Yadav urged the BJP government to focus not just on name changes but also on improving the conditions of the railway stations. He emphasized the need for prioritizing safety and addressing infrastructure issues. “There is a request to the BJP government to change not just the names but also the conditions of the railway stations. …And when you get free time from changing names, then take some time out and think about preventing record-breaking railway accidents,” Yadav posted on X.
