The Karnataka state government on Monday banned the use of artificial colors in chicken and fish kebabs. This move aims to address concerns related to food safety and public health. Artificial colors, often used to enhance the visual appeal of food, can pose health risks, including allergic reactions and potential links to long-term health issues.

The ban has come from the state’s Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao saying that if food vendors are found violating the rules will be fined for Rs 10 lakh and will be dealt with serious action and up to 7 years of jail.

Meanwhile, it is worth to be noted that move by the state government has come after 39 samples of kebabs were subjected to tests in laboratory and 8 variants of kebabs were found to have artificial colors, which can cause adverse health effects. Notably, the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 Act prohibits the usage of harmful artificial colors.

Earlier, in March, the Karnataka government banned the use of yellow color in ‘Gobi Manchurian’ and ‘Cotton Candy’ which can have serious effects on health, especially in children.

Key points to note:

Health Concerns: Artificial colors can cause adverse health effects such as allergic reactions, hyperactivity in children, and potential links to carcinogenicity. This ban is a preventive measure to protect consumers from these health risks.

Impact on Businesses: While the ban might pose initial challenges for businesses accustomed to using artificial colors, it also opens up opportunities to explore natural alternatives. Businesses may need to adapt their recipes and sourcing strategies.

Consumer Awareness: The government will likely engage in campaigns to raise consumer awareness about the benefits of avoiding artificial colors in food. This can help in gaining public support for the ban.
