The first World Skydiving Day saw a rare and exhilarating event in India as Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat took to the skies to experience the thrilling sport of skydiving. Undertaking a tandem skydive at the Narnaul airstrip in Haryana, the 53-year-old minister's excitement was palpable. Videos captured the moment he leaped from the plane, exclaiming "Good good, maza aa gaya" (it’s fun) when asked mid-dive how he was feeling.

Top of the world?

Before taking the plunge, Minister Shekhawat received lessons in skydiving. The footage showed him preparing diligently before boarding the plane with his instructor. Another skydiver followed closely, capturing the camera jump. As the plane ascended and the moment of the jump approached, Shekhawat expressed his eagerness, saying he was "super excited." Once the parachute opened, his joy was evident as he took in the breathtaking views.

After landing safely, Minister Shekhawat shared his thoughts with reporters, calling the day thrilling and significant for the world of aeronautical sports. "Today is a thrilling day for me but, more importantly, it is an important day for the world and for the world of aero sports because World Skydiving Day is being celebrated for the first time. I can see aerosports and tourism touching new heights from today," he said.

Boosting Tourism and Aerosports in India

Highlighting the importance of such events, Shekhawat pointed out that thousands of Indians travel to places like Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, and New Zealand to enjoy aero sports. He emphasized that now, they can experience the same thrills within India, which will also boost local tourism. "I have flagged off India's first skydiving aircraft and I wish great success to the team. As the tourism minister, it is my responsibility to develop new tourist spots. We would like to encourage this in more places, including Madhya Pradesh and Goa," he added.
