HMP Virus: Five years post-COVID-19, China is grappling with a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases. Reports from various sources, including social media, indicate that hospitals are overwhelmed with patients suffering from this virus, while crematories struggle to keep pace with demand. Observers note the concurrent circulation of multiple viruses, such as influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19, raising concerns about a potential health crisis. Despite rumors of a state of emergency, official confirmation remains absent.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) typically manifests with flu-like symptoms and primarily impacts the upper respiratory system, although it can lead to lower respiratory infections in some cases. The virus tends to peak during winter and early spring months. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HMPV is highly contagious, spreading through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, direct contact with infected individuals, and contaminated surfaces.
In response to the detection of two HMPV cases in Karnataka, the Delhi government has issued urgent directives to hospitals to prepare for a potential increase in respiratory illnesses. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized the need for readiness and communication with the Union Health Ministry to ensure timely updates. "Hospitals under the Delhi government must be fully equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses," Bharadwaj stated.

Recent reports indicate varying numbers of HMPV cases across several Indian states:
With the Maha Kumbh Mela set to attract approximately 450 million devotees in Prayagraj, fears regarding the spread of HMPV are escalating due to recent case reports across India. Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public by stating that HMPV is not a new virus, having been identified since 2001, and that the health ministry is prepared to manage any potential outbreaks during the event.
The cost for an HMPV RT-PCR test ranges between Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 at various labs, with comprehensive tests potentially reaching Rs 20,000. As concerns grow regarding another lockdown due to rising infections, the government has urged calm, asserting that current cases are not linked to those in China and that monitoring systems are in place.India's experience from the COVID-19 pandemic has equipped it better for handling such health crises now than before.
