New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an extension of the deadline for Aadhaar holders to update their details online for free. Initially set for September 14, 2024, the new deadline is now December 14, 2024. This marks the second extension, following a previous adjustment on June 14. The government is providing an additional 90 days for citizens to update their information through UIDAI’s official online portal without incurring any charges. However, it’s important to note that this offer applies only to online updates; any changes made, including biometric updates at Aadhaar centers, will still incur a fee.

Importance of updating Aadhaar details

Why is the government emphasizing the need for timely updates to Aadhaar details? The Aadhaar number, a 12-digit unique identification number, has become essential for every Indian resident. It serves not only as proof of identity and address but also plays a crucial role in various daily activities. From applying for government schemes to opening bank accounts, booking travel tickets, and filing taxes, Aadhaar is central to numerous processes.

With its growing significance, Aadhaar has also become a target for fraudsters. The UIDAI, the body responsible for managing Aadhaar, asserts that keeping Aadhaar details updated helps the government maintain accurate records and combat Aadhaar-related fraud. The Indian government is encouraging Aadhaar holders to refresh their details every ten years to ensure the reliability of both demographic and biometric information.

Reasons to keep Aadhaar updated

Updating Aadhaar is important for several reasons:

  1. Efficient service delivery: Accurate Aadhaar information ensures that government services and schemes reach the right individuals without delays caused by outdated details.
  2. Fraud prevention: Maintaining up-to-date information helps minimize the risk of fraud associated with identity theft and misuse.
  3. Verification processes: Aadhaar is widely used for various verification needs, including financial transactions, educational admissions, and travel bookings. Ensuring your details are correct can help prevent complications in these processes.

How to update Aadhaar details online for free?

Updating your Aadhaar information online is a simple process that can be completed from home:

  1.  Visit the official UIDAI website: Go to the Aadhaar Self-Service Portal at [myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in] (http://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in).
  2.  Log in: Enter your Aadhaar number and the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Check your details: Review the identity and address details displayed on your Aadhaar profile. If any information is incorrect or outdated, proceed to update it.
  4. Upload supporting documents: Select the appropriate document type (Proof of Identity or Proof of Address) and upload a scanned copy of the original document. Accepted formats include JPEG, PNG, and PDF with a maximum file size of 2 MB.
  5.  Submit your update request: After submitting your update request, you will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) that you can use to track the status of your update.

Biometric updates

While demographic updates like address and name can be done online, biometric updates, such as fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs, require a visit to a UIDAI-authorized Aadhaar center. It is also advisable to update the UID details of children every ten years or when they reach the age of 15 to include their updated biometric information.

Steps to update biometric information:

  1. Visit an Aadhaar enrolment center: Go to the nearest Aadhaar enrolment center with your child.
  2. Complete the enrolment form: Fill out the Aadhaar enrolment form.
  3. Submit biometric data: Provide your child’s biometric data or a photograph if they are younger than five years old.
  4. Pay applicable fees: There will be a fee for biometric updates.
