After getting backlash on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ row, Tamil Nadu sports minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday has ignited another row. Soon after India – Pakistan match in Ahmedabad on Saturday, he condemned the actions of fans. In a video that got surfaced on social media, the fans at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium could be heard chanting slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” as Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Muhammad Rizwan walked up to the dressing room.

Taking it to his official X handle, he wrote, “India is renowned for its sportsmanship and hospitality. However, the treatment meted out to Pakistan players at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is unacceptable and a new low. Sports should be a unifying force between countries, fostering true brotherhood. Using it as a tool to spread hatred is condemnable.”

Before this, Udhayanidhi has sparked a row with his remarks on Sanatan Dharma. The son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and party chief MK Stalin, had said that Sanatan Dharma must be “eradicated” as it is against the idea of social justice. “Sanatana is like malaria and dengue and so it must be eradicated and not opposed,” he had said in September.

Making a sharp attack on Udhayanidhi, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia posted on his X handle (in Hindi), “This hateful dengue, malaria mosquito is out to spread poison again. You don’t have a problem when a match is paused for namaz on the field,” he said. “Our Lord Ram resides in every corner of the universe, so say Jai Shri Ram.”
